Product Description

Mala D Tablet is a low-dose combined oral contraceptive. Each hormone tablet has ethinyl estradiol 0.03 mg and levonorgestrel 0.15 mg. The usual pack has 28 tablets, so you take one every day without a gap. The hormone tablets stop the ovary from releasing an egg, thicken cervical mucus so sperm move less easily, and make the womb lining less ready for a pregnancy. It is also used when periods are irregular. Take it at the same time each day. It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.

Key Information

  • Combined oral contraceptive pill

  • Contains Ethinyl Estradiol 0.03 mg and Levonorgestrel 0.15 mg in the hormone tablets

  • 28-tablet pack, so one tablet is taken every day

  • Used to prevent pregnancy and to regularise periods

  • Tablet form (a strip of 28)

  • For oral use

  • Prescription medicine

Key Ingredient

Ethinyl Estradiol (0.03 mg), Levonorgestrel (0.15 mg)

Key Benefits

  • Prevents pregnancy when taken correctly every day

  • Stops ovulation and makes fertilisation less likely

  • Can make periods lighter, more regular and less painful

  • One tablet a day with no break between packs

  • Useful when a doctor wants to steady an irregular cycle

  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

How Does It Work?

The two hormones act together. They stop the monthly release of an egg. They also thicken mucus at the cervix, which slows sperm, and they change the lining of the womb so a pregnancy is less likely to start. Taking a tablet every day, including the non-hormone tablets at the end of a 28-day pack, keeps the habit unbroken.

Directions For Use

  • Start on day 1 of the period, or as your doctor tells you.

  • Swallow one tablet whole at the same time every day. Do not crush it.

  • It may be taken with or without food.

  • When the pack ends, start the next pack the next day. Do not leave a gap.

  • If you vomit within about 4 hours of a hormone tablet, take another one from a spare pack if the leaflet says so.

  • If a tablet is late or missed, follow the pack leaflet and use a condom until you are protected again.

  • A new pack started late, or several missed tablets, needs extra contraception. Ask a doctor or pharmacist the same day.

Safety Information

  • Do not use it if you are already pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Not suitable if you smoke and are over 35, are very overweight, are on long bed rest, or have had a blood clot, heart attack, stroke, or certain cancers of the breast or womb.

  • Stop and seek urgent care for leg swelling and pain, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or a vision change. These can be signs of a clot.

  • Tell your doctor about migraine, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease and all other medicines. Some drugs, including certain antibiotics and epilepsy medicines, can make the pill less reliable.

  • Spotting between periods can happen in the first months. Report it if it keeps going or periods stop when you have missed tablets.

  • Smoking raises clot risk. Stopping smoking makes the pill safer.

  • Keep out of children’s reach.

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea

  • Headache

  • Breast tenderness or pain
